Antique German Mantel Clock Enameled Dial Wood Case Crowned Eagle Trim
Antique German/Prussian Mantel Clock Enameled Dial Wood Case Crowned Eagle Trim 3 Hole Wind Running? Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! One party thinks the clock may be of Austrian origination. Very unique and uncommon German wood clock case here. Has the look of a Biedermeier style to it. The clock probably dates to the 1820’s to 1840’s period. Has a bronze plaque at the bottom that says, “Carl” and “1786” on it. Not sure if that was someone of royalty in Germany or Prussia or some commemorative piece to someone else. We do not think the clock dates back to the 1780s. Very unique as well in that the two outer wind arbors serve no apparent function. Only the middle wind arbor is attached to the movement and winds it for this time only clock. Clock has good beat to it. The movement’s crutch runs well with no pendulum in place. The clock has a two section wood case. First, there is a wood base with wood wafer legs. Has a brass plate on the front with an embossed scene of soldiers and chariots. The upper part of the case is not affixed to the lower part in any way. Just sits atop it. The upper part of the case then has brass torches on the front of the case and then brass beading around the second base. Nice wood case here that is painted black. Has a peaked top. There is a hairline crack that runs from the right top of the clock down to the bezel on the right side of the front of the case. On the top front of the case, there is an eagle with outspread wings. Has a crown on it’s head and then a German insignia below it. Then there are brass trim pieces below that, one on left side is missing There then is a brass trim piece that goes around the 3 sides. One of the tacks that holds it in place is not correct. Chipping of the face at the “4” and “8” marks and some scratching in places. The gold colored bezel is ornately designed. No maker mark on the movement. The bezel is securely attached to the case by the hinge. The beveled concave glass in the bezel is intact, no cracking or blistering. There is a metal enameled white face. Hairlines along the edge of the face is a few places. The movement looks good. The time spring feels sound when keyed. The clock comes with what appears to be the appropriate pendulum. The silk thread the pendulum hangs from is broken, so cannot determine if the clock is in running condition or not. As noted earlier, the crutch is under power and moves on it’s own, when the clock is wound, but without the pendulum in place. The clock will come with a wind key. The German Steeple Mantel Clock stands 19.25″ tall, by 12-13/16″ across, by 6-7/8 wide. The clock face is 5.75 across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
