George Edwards Lithograph Green Gold Finch & Butterflies Copper Engraving Framed. Catesby Edwards Seligmann Le Chardonneret Verd Lithograph Framed & Matted RARE. His prints are celebrated for their scientific precision and artistic beauty, often depicting birds in their natural habitats with other elements like butterflies, insects, or plants. The original prints were hand-colored copper plate engravings printed on handmade paper. The prints cover a wide range of species, from native European birds to exotic tropical ones like parrots and toucans. Antique Bird Lithography Engraving. (1720 Nürnberg -1762 Nürnberg). “Cardueli affinis viridis – Le Chardonneret verd”. From Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Selener Vogel. Hand-colored copperplate engravings after George Edwards and Mark Catesby (above engravings after Edwards). 16×21 Framed and Matted. From there he traveled to Florida and the Bahamas, returning to England in 1726 with a vast store of information on the wildlife he had observed. It became the earliest colored book on American birds. He was an ornithologist and bird illustrator who was heavily influenced by Catesby. The plates that were contained within these works were valued for their landscape backgrounds, which were unusual at the time. To satisfy the tremendous demand for both these landmark works, Johann Michael Seligmann, a German publisher, issued a nine-volume compilation of the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. In bringing these masterworks to a larger audience, Seligmann has earned himself a rightful place in natural history circles, and his charming prints, reflecting well on their sources, stand on their own as another respected source for 18th century natural history documentation. For sale is a set of four original antique anatomical copperplate engravings, offered together as one complete and unified lot. The prints originate from German medical and anatomical folios published circa the mid-18th century and were produced for academic and physician reference during the Baroque period, not as decorative reproductions. Each sheet is an authentic copperplate engraving printed on laid paper, exhibiting strong line work, visible plate impressions, and period ink saturation consistent with 18th-century printing methods. The plates depict cranial, ocular, auditory, skeletal, and thoracic anatomy and include period typography in Latin and German. Engraver credits appear within the plates, including L. Probst, as shown in the photographs. These are period impressions consistent with original publication-era production. The architectural cartouches, scientific notation, and compositional style reflect the scholarly rigor of German anatomical publishing during the Enlightenment era. Individual sheets from comparable folios are often encountered singly; this offering presents a balanced and intentional four print grouping. All four prints are presented in matching frames for a unified and visually striking presentation. Framed later than the pressing, the frames are included for display purposes but are exquisite; the prints have not been examined outside the frames. This set is offered strictly as a group and will not be separated. No major tears, losses, or repairs were observed. Frames show light cosmetic wear from prior use and storage, with some paint loss. Each piece is carefully wrapped and padded then boxed to protect both frame and artwork during transit.
