Beautifully hand-decorated surface with elaborate wire frame. I would date this 1880-90 and its LARGE- measuring 8 1/2 from the tri-color tinsel loop to the tinsel tail. Imagine a whole tree of these decadent ornaments. I find these early examples are almost impossible to find. Pictures help to tell the story best. It’s from my private stash- I’ve ad it for decades. Antique German Xmas Ornament Foxy Grandpa/Hans Clown on a Reflector Indent RARE. Early 1900s from Lauscha Germany winter cottage industry effort. This complex hand blown and molded glass ornament is all original. Foxy Grandpa, also referred to as Hans the Clown’s head sits atop a deep floral reflector indent. He’s given a rarity of R-2 in “Christmas Rarities ” by John Lightner. Completely intact glass with metal hanging cap most likely original. Internal silvering strong on the indent and faded or not present in the head. Foxy Grandpa identification is due to the presence of eyeglasses. Gelatin paint on the head and either gelatin or egg tempera pink on the indent. Paints were made with materials available on the farm. Thanks for looking, and feel free to browse.
