His prints are celebrated for their scientific precision and artistic beauty, often depicting birds in their natural habitats with other elements like butterflies, insects, or plants. The original prints were hand-colored copper plate engravings printed on handmade paper. The prints cover a wide range of species, from native European birds to exotic tropical ones like parrots and toucans. Antique Bird Lithography Engraving. Hand-colored copperplate engravings after George Edwards and Mark Catesby (above engravings after Edwards). 16×21 Framed and Matted. From there he traveled to Florida and the Bahamas, returning to England in 1726 with a vast store of information on the wildlife he had observed. It became the earliest colored book on American birds. He was an ornithologist and bird illustrator who was heavily influenced by Catesby. The plates that were contained within these works were valued for their landscape backgrounds, which were unusual at the time. To satisfy the tremendous demand for both these landmark works, Johann Michael Seligmann, a German publisher, issued a nine-volume compilation of the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. In bringing these masterworks to a larger audience, Seligmann has earned himself a rightful place in natural history circles, and his charming prints, reflecting well on their sources, stand on their own as another respected source for 18th century natural history documentation. Offering this Antique Victorian Children’s lithograph Dresden paper covered sewing box from the late 19th. The box features a charming lithograph winter scene on its lid, a style common in Victorian illustrations. This particular image shows two young girls in colorful coats and hats walking through a snowy landscape with a small cart, a theme frequently used on antique Christmas postcards and greeting cards from the early 1900s. Inside, the box is divided into compartments, some of which contain wooden spools of thread. These little presentation boxes often featured printed Dresden German paper exteriors and were used to organize or display small items like doll accessories or sewing supplies. Top of sewing box unattached. Paper loss to back as shown. Wonderful little example is a child’s sewing needle box. Please see pictures for details and measurements.
