This endearing Sonneberg Belton-type bisque doll, dating to around 1880, reflects the elegant French-style dolls of the period such as those by Jumeau or Bru. She features a bisque socket head with a flattened solid dome, blue spiral-thread glass eyes, a closed mouth, and unpierced ears. Her wig appears to be antique-either human hair or mohair-styled to suit the period. Her composition and wood eight-ball jointed body retains its original paint and finish but shows surface wear, cracks, and age-related paint loss, particularly on the limbs and torso. Please review all photos for details. The head is incised “8” and shows a barely noticeable professional overpaint on the back and left side. She wears an antique brown pleated dress with blue velvet collar and cuffs, a matching bonnet, lace-trimmed undergarments, and antique leather shoes with metal buckles. The dress has scattered holes and small worn areas consistent with age. A charming metal “BEBE” pin adorns her collar, adding a sweet finishing touch. Height: 15 inches. Head: Bisque socket head, flattened dome. Eyes: Blue spiral-thread glass eyes. Wig: Appears to be antique, either human hair or mohair. Body: Composition and wood, eight-ball jointed, straight wrists. Markings: “8” incised on back of head. Clothing: Antique dress with wear and holes; matching bonnet; lace undergarments; antique shoes with buckles. Accessories: Original “BEBE” pin on collar. Professional overpaint on back and left side of head. Age wear, cracking, and paint loss on body. Holes and small areas of wear in dress. Shoes show age wear but remain intact. Origin: Sonneberg, Germany, circa 1880. Why it’s collectible. Belton-type dolls from Sonneberg represent a fascinating chapter in 19th-century German dollmaking, when artisans sought to emulate the refinement of French Bebes. Their serene faces, fine bisque, and transitional wooden/composition bodies make them beloved among collectors of early bisque dolls. Presented here is a really adorable EARLY 18 Simon & Halbig 808 german antique doll. Simon & Halbig was one of the king of all dollmakers from 1869 to 1932. They were best known for their bisque heads and innovations in the doll industry. She stands 18 inches tall and has a bisque head with beautiful deep blue paperweight eyes, multistroke brows, upper and lower painted lashes, pierced ears with cream colored glass earrings, accented nostrils and closed mouth with gorgeous accented outlined lips. She has rosy cheeks and a single cute dimple on her chin. She stands on a composition body with straight wrists and jointed arms and legs. Her head is adorned with her original cardboard pate and original blond curly wig. She also comes with a bow and blue flower accents in her hair. Dress: She wears an antique white dress with a ribbon interwoven at the waist and intricate crochet design with blue ribbon accent at the chest and hemline and matching bonnet. She retains her original slip, cream colored socks and antique shoes with steel buckles. There is a small crack at 11 oclock and 5 oclock position on the top rim of her bisque head. No other hairlines, cracks or restorations to her bisque. She has smooth bisque face and her composition body is in excellent shape. She holds a nice pose with good stringing. If this early German doll reminds you of some of the Jumeau dolls that was Wilhelm Dehler’s intent. This lovely doll with her gorgeous face was made for the French Trade Market. She is early with her straight wrists as the newer more flexible wrists came in just about the time of her making. Please study all of the photos as they have a story to tell about this doll. She stands about 16 and her head is PERFECT. There are no cracks or hairlines. There is a rough spot on the top of the rim which I believe is wig glue. There is wig glue around parts of the top of her head. She has a roping as seen in the photos. No idea what it is for and since she has a wig, not concerned at all. She does a dark spot on the bottom of her chin as seen in the photo. I have no idea what caused it & it seems to be a rough spot. Her EYES have it being rayed just like the early Jumeau dolls. Her face also resembles those wonderful dolls as well. Check out the dolls in “The Jumeau Book “, to see page 289 with the rayed and outlined eyes & page 308. There are many more examples in that book that this doll is an attempt to make her Jumeau like. Her body is in great shape with no repairs, no repaint. She comes with a sweet little dress, her human hair wig, underpants, shoes and socks. This is a beautiful doll looking for a new wonderful home:- I will miss her but it is time. Her head will be packed and diapered. She will be wrapped In bubble wrap and will packed plus she will be insured:-The starting price does not reflect what I feel is the value of this doll. Such a little sweetie with those adorable square teeth! The bisque is free of cracks, chips, rubs or repairs. Stationary brown eyes and pierced ears that have no chipping. Very nice condition original brown human hair wig factory styled in 2 braids. Wonderful composition body with separate ball joints and straight wrists, factory original finish. Original dress, antique full slip, half slip, bloomers, brown stockings & shoes. The dress has hook’n eye closures and smocking that accents the dress, some holes in dress that seem to blend in nicely. Back of head is incised ” S H 908″.
