A Gorgeous Huge Piano Baby. Two Sisters and Their Brother. Isn’t this a wonderful piece? A fine old Victorian-era German trio of piano babies at play. Marching happily along the beach, this little group exudes the contentment. Of a perfect carefree childhood day. The sisters grasp each other’s hands. As their hair blows in the wind. Their brother in his cute sailor shirt has manufactory holes. I’ve made him a little fishing pole to hold – it’s made from a painted. Wood dowel and some hemp- fiber twine. This piece is unmarked; it is Heubach quality; possibly made by German Doll Maker Hertwig, with amazing modeling and painting. Intaglio eyes, two stroke brows and lids, carved open mouths, the usual lovely German doll faces. Heavy, solid, it weights over 7 pounds! And I’m happy to say it’s in excellent condition as well, with just a slight bit of gold rub to the detailing on the clothes, and a few tiny inconspicuous firing flaws which you always find on these old German bisques. (illustration not included in sale). Inspired by this Victorian painting called Seahorses. The children are using their imaginations and playing as children do. The boy is imagining he is riding a cart pulled by horses; his sisters have happily stepped into this role. Since they are at the sea, the girls are “sea” horses. The boy has tied rope to the girls’ dresses and they all seem to be having a great time playing this make-believe game. It would be fun to set the statue up the same way; there are factory holes in the boy’s hands and also under both girls’ arms meant for just this purpose. Quality workmanship – look at the carefully carved detailing on the woven-straw hat. And note how the red strap is artfully threaded through an opening in the beautifully modeled hand. The modeling is sharper and crisper than on the smaller piece. What is a piano baby? As the name suggests, these were porcelain babies that lived on top of pianos. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, every well-appointed parlor had a piano. And every respectable piano wore a fancy shawl, or piano drapery. Were often works of art in themselves: embroidered silk or woven tapestries with. Tassels or handmade lace edging. Piano babies sat on top of the shawl. Ensuring that the shawl did. Not slide off the piano, because. A proper piano must never drop its shawl.. Here are other Piano Babies I have for sale, also a large pair, 12. Photos taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color. Though monitor colors may vary. I have lost count of how many times over the years I have personally received a broken porcelain item due to poor packing – that is heartbreaking and I don’t want any customer of mine to ever have that experience! If you have a preference, please let me know before you pay. These are items from my own collection. I’ve taken great care to provide an accurate description and have provided many large clear photos. The high resolution photos are part of the description.
