18 VERY EARLY ANTIQUE J. BISQUE SHOULDER HEAD DOLL. TALL THIN FRENCH TYPE KID BODY. Face Big Brown Eyes. Hip Joint Needs TLC. This gorgeous old doll reminds us of the early French Dolls. She has amazing big brown eyes and sweet pursed lips. Her handmade antique dress is charming! Many of the dolls were from a large collection at a nearby Historical Society. We do not know if this doll was part of that collection. This sweet doll is marked with only a number for her size, 6 on the back of her head by her wig. We searched through all of our reference books and finally identified her as a very early Kestner. We found most of her information in the book, Kestner, King of Dollmakers. She is over 130 years old and in amazing shape! She was designed to compete with the bisque dolls from the French Market. We will describe her including terms from this book. HEAD Our sweet old doll has a bisque shoulder head and a kid body. Her charming childlike face is beautifully made with pretty deep brown fixed eyes and striated 5 stroke eyebrows. She has delicately painted upper and lower lashes and a pale red dot in the corner of each eye and each nostril. Our girl has deeply blushed chubby cheeks and a pretty red closed mouth with a protruding upper lip, a cleft under her lower lip. She even has a tiny dimple in her chin. Her old reddish blonde wig is soft like mohair and likely original. It is very thin. The cap that came with her is made of a stretchy blue fabric. CLOTHING Her antique outfit is precious! It was designed with a denim colored fabric and appears to be a simple peasant outfit. It has ribbons and lace trim. She is wearing an old gold pin near the collar. We cannot tell exactly how old her dress is but we can tell it was handmade. Her underclothing is also handmade including a half slip and bloomers both trimmed with gorgeous lace. She has old stockings and buckle shoes. BODY Our darling doll has a thin elongated kid body (often called a Lady Doll Body) with kid upper arms and legs. One of her upper arms has been recovered. Her lower arms are bisque with blushed hands. She has gusseted joints at the shoulder, elbow, hips and knees. The sawdust is tightly packed so bending is not easy for her. She has tiny toes outlined in stitches. SIZE Our slender lady measures about 18 inches from head to toe. The doll stand is for photography only and is not included in the sale. CONDITION This old bisque doll is in Good to Very Good Antique Condition! She has an adorable bisque face with gorgeous deep brown eyes and delicate features including skillfully painted rosy cheeks and a darling serene smile! There were no cracks or crazing on her head or shoulders. Two of her fingertips are chipped. Most of her kid body is in nice antique shape. One arm has been recovered. One hip has torn at the joint and is leaking sawdust and her knees are patched. We have wrapped her hip in tissue to prevent further leakage. That hip could use some TLC. Her pretty blue dress is antique and there are some tears and small holes in the fabric. Her old bloomers also have some tears. This sweet old dress fits her perfectly! Our young lady is just marvelous and displays beautifully! This is an antique doll. We havent seen a doll this beautiful in quite a while. Her darling innocent face is so precious you just have to love her! She would welcome some help with her hip and would love to become friends with your other antique or modern dolls. What a fabulous treasure!
