Antique German Faience Walzenkrug Beer Stein Schrezheim Floral Theme dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made in the early 1800s. The stein was made in Schrezheim’s factory, one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim reddish clay and glazed with a beautiful blue tin glaze. It is decorated with typical Schrezheim floral decorations in yellow and magenta. This type of beer stein is usually called a “Walzenkrug” or “Cylindrical stein” in German. The pewter mountings consist of a pewter lid with a hollow-ball thumblift, typical for German faience steins of the 1700s. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for its faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. The lid is engraved with the initials M. R. G. That means the stein was made no later than 1806 or a few years earlier. The central medallion shows a religious figure with the words “Ora pro nobis beate Antoni” – “Pray for us blessed Antony”. The stein was dedicated to St. Antony of Padua – maybe the original owner was a clergyman. The stein is marked with the ink “W” – a known decorator’s mark, and some scratched marks typical for Schrezheim. The stein is in great condition for the object of 200 years old. The body doesn’t have any breaks, hairlines, or repairs. There are some very minor flakes on the upper and lower rim, and the handle was repaired with a pewter strap – this is a very old repair probably made in the same early 1800s. The pewter is in excellent condition. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 L capacity. Condition: handle repaired, minor flakes. Title: Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim c.
