Just one of inkFrog’s. Rare Antique German Silver Slider Trumpeter Charm Gutenmorgen Vielliebchen. This is a lovely and very unusual 2-part sliding charm depicting “Der Trompeter von Säkkingen” (The Trumpeter of Sackingen). The front of the charm depicts the trumpeter from an epic poem (love story) written by the very famous poet Joseph Victor von Scheffel. One of the most read books in Germany, Scheffel’s poem is so well-loved that the town of Bad Sackingen has also come to be known as Trumpeter Town. In the story, the trumpeter Werner loves Maria, the daughter of the Baron, but the father and mother want her to marry the cowardly Damian. Werner proves himself a hero and is opportunely discovered to be of noble birth, so all ends happily. The inside of the charm is hand-engraved with the words “Gutenmorgen Vielliebchen, ” which means Good morning sweetheart. But its meaning is actually a flirtatious game that would be played by young ladies and their suitors. The game is said to have originated in Germany, although different versions of the game were played in Sweden (especially at Christmastime), in Holland, and in France where the game was known as. In Germany, the game would have included a greeting. Is a game in which a person, on finding a double-kernel within an almond or nut, may offer the second kernel to another person and demand a playful forfeit from that person to be paid on their next meeting. Or it could be more elaborate, involving a gift. Whomever is first to say the greeting upon their next meeting would be the recipient of a gift. The charm is in good antique condition, with typical wear for its age. The inside page was gilded, and shows some wear to the gold coating and from sliding against the top piece. It is stamped “800” for silver content, and “DEP” (Depose), which means it is registered. The measurement is 9/16″ by 7/8″, and the weight is 3.5 grams. Payments are due within 5 days.
