ANTIQUE 19thC GERMAN HANAU SOLID SILVER GILT BIRD ORNAMENT EWER, REMOVABLE HEAD. An antique German solid silver gilt. Ornamental ewer in the form of a. Bearing Hanau silver marks. Dating to the late 19th Century. Crafted in the Renaissance style, the crested bird has been cast and hand engraved and chased with fine naturalistic details. The head removes to reveal a vessel within the body, the head being used as a drinking cup. The inside of the neck is marked with Hanau silver marks, reminiscent of 16th Century Augsburg marks and including the simulated’Tremiolerstrich’ zigzag line used for silver assaying. Many German silver cups of the 16th Century took the form of a bird with a removable head, the art form continuing well into the 17th Century. Length (from beak to tail): 22. Cm or 8 5/8 inches.
