19th C. Antique Medical Liebreich Ophthalmoscope Eye Examination Instrument Box
Up for sale is a rare antique 19th-century Liebreich’s ophthalmoscope, an early medical instrument designed for examination of the interior of the eye. This classic ophthalmological instrument is based on the design developed by German ophthalmologist Richard Liebreich during the second half of the 19th century. The instrument features a circular reflecting mirror with a central viewing aperture and an adjustable hinged magnifying lens mounted in front. It is fitted with its original long black handle with metal collar. The ophthalmoscope comes in its original fitted presentation/storage case, lined with velvet and marked on the lid Liebreich’s Ophthalmoscope. ” Inside the case is the original retailer’s label “Albert Klein – Gand (Ghent, Belgium). The instrument is in very good antique condition considering its age, showing normal signs of use and oxidation consistent with a 19th-century medical instrument. The mirror, hinged lens and handle are preserved. The case shows expected age-related wear but remains attractive and displays the instrument beautifully. A very interesting early piece of ophthalmology and medical history, perfect for a collection of antique surgical, optical or scientific instruments. Found at an estate sale in Belgium.
