Antique Wooden Crystal Model Lot (84) Krantz-Stye Crystallography Mineralogy Set
Large 84-piece lot of antique wooden crystal form models, originally used for teaching crystallography and mineralogy. Each piece in this collection is a hand-carved and turned wooden model representing a specific crystal form or crystal system. This kind of instructional set was standard equipment in university geology and mineralogy departments from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century. The best-known maker of these models was the German firm Krantz, whose wooden crystal sets (offered in sizes from 12 pieces up to 150) were the world standard for this kind of teaching aid. This lot is consistent with that tradition in both scale and labeling convention, though it is unsigned and assembled from more than one original set, rather than a single matched boxed edition. Many of the models in this lot retain their original identifying marks. Some are in cursive ink spelling out the full crystal name and others show the abbreviated letter/number codes used in classical crystallography texts to denote crystal faces. These marks make the set genuinely useful for study, rather than purely decorative, although they do serve as beautiful and historical home decor.
