Antique German 1858 Paper-Mache Doll
This antique Paper-Mach shoulder head doll stands at 13-inches with a thin leather body and wooden lower limbs. She has an oval-shaped face, strong elongated throat, black sculptured hair which is drawn smoothly from her face and formed into long ringlet curls at the back of her head. She has defined eye sockets with rare brown painted eyes, black upper eyeliner, feathered eyebrows, accented nostrils, and a closed mouth with a center accent line. She wears a simple-styled cotton gown and cotton undergarments. Her antique thin fabric leggings (a substitute for drawers) were found on the doll, being tacked in place to the upper leather thighs. These were carefully removed as they had become stained and torn. Also, the stitching threads were leaving tiny holes in the thin leather. Several other tears (small openings) were discovered in the thin leather of the leather body and these were “repaired”, being covered with narrow strips of thin cotton lawn, glued in place with a white glue. A new set of Drawers were made for the doll using a thin 100% cotton batiste and trimmed with 100% cotton lace edging. Her cotton Petticoat was laundered to remove accumulated dust. Both Drawers and Petticoat close at the back with a small pearl button and hand-worked loop. The doll’s dress was made by June Ellen Lane, in a German antique-style, with a wide cartridge-pleated skirt, a wide shoulder-collar, bell-shaped sleeves ending at half-lower arm level with net inserts. A narrow white braid trims the outer edges of the collar and the lower edge of the sleeves. White lace edging trims the low neck edge. Narrow maroon silk ribbon, twisted in a unique design, also trims the collar and sleeves. The dress closes at the back bodice with three small pearl buttons and hand-worked loops. The doll stands in a Saddle Stand. The original UFDC 1984 35th Annual Exhibit White Ribbon and a Theriault Tag hang from the back waist by a small gold safety pin.
