This beautiful German Bisque Character doll, marked z226z, by Kestner, circa 1915, is an absolute gem and perfect for any collector or enthusiast. Standing at 10 inches tall (25 cm), this doll has a Bisque socket head that is in very good vintage condition and features gorgeous brown glass sleep eyes that open and close smoothly. Her painted lashes and feathered brows add depth and realism to her expressive face, and her open mouth showcases two porcelain upper teeth and a tongue. There is a small fracture underneath the left hairline that has been expertly repaired sometime in the past. The doll comes with her original blonde mohair wig that sits atop a plaster pate, completing her classic look. Her wig could use a good shampoo but this was not done to prevent damage to her lovely head. Her composition bent limb baby body is in good vintage condition with a small abrasion at the back neck and one elbow with a little crazing. Her limbs and head could use a tightening of the bands, but this was not done because the little bit of looseness is not enough to attempt a repair. The doll is dressed in an antique costume that perfectly complements her vintage charm although the baby was stored in an open environment and the clothes are stained. The clothes have been gently cleaned per antique clothing protocols. The costume adds a touch of elegance to her appearance and is sure to be a favorite among collectors. She has not been dressed in her original outer dress because of how fragile it is but it will accompany the doll and is shown folded up with the doll in the photos. According to Theriault’s related to a Kestner with the same marks as this doll, the “z” designation of the 226 model is quite rare, and the origin of its designation is a mystery.
